WILLIAM JAMES MOORE
October 1, 1930 - November 6 , 2011.
Bill had plans. The first was to leave tiny Wellsville, Ohio and see the world. He studied hard, competed for and won a Navy ROTC scholarship to Ohio State where his degree in geology ignited a lifelong passion. The second of his plans involved even more passion. Head over heels in love, he asked Verne, "What are you doing for the next 50 years?"
Those 50 years together lengthened to 61. Impressed with his skills as an R&D expert and petroleum guru the Navy sent them the length and breadth of the world to places like Taiwan and Bahrain and visited even more exotic places.
When the time came to doff his uniform he parleyed his knowledge of the petroleum industry into a job in Honolulu with BHP. Their two grown daughters, Kim and Val, joined them.
When he retired he never stopped working. He put his energy to the Military Officers Association of America where he helped countless families. He volunteered hundreds of hours to Kailua Friends of the Library. He was also a founding member of the Kailua Historical Society.
A Scotsman by genes, Bill was ferociously protective of his family. He plunged into mountains of books and journals in a never-ending, vicarious search for adventure and knowledge. He kept his geologist’s fascination with rock formations and gem stones and was never without a couple of lucky ones in his pocket. He was a football fanatic. Woe betide anyone who got between Bill and his TV when Ohio State charged on to the gridiron.
Bill lived his plans. He was blessed with the best of soul mates and together they made a good life. All who knew him were blessed by his company. Services will be held on Friday, December 2 at 10:00 a.m. at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe.
