FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

JOAN PECK
JOAN PECK Long time O'ahu North Shore resident Joan Boardman Peck died on Thursday, October 18, 2012, after a long decline following a stroke two years ago. Joan was born on January 16,1924. in Sterlington outside of Monroe, Louisiana, where she still has many loving friends. Joan graduated from Neville High School and was an alumnus of The University of Wisconsin with a degree in Engineering before marrying her handsome Air Force pilot, Fred Peck. They traveled the world together during his military career and developed deep friendships everywhere they went, but decided to return to Hawai'i, where they lived here the rest of their lives, after Fred retired from his last duty assignment at Wheeler Air Force Base in 1967. Adventurous and outgoing, she was also kind and giving. Joan led her life dedicated to the needs and support of others. She loved to travel and was always the first one to explore a new foreign neighborhood, leading the charge up a hill or splashing into the ocean, bayou or river. She loved to play golf, bridge and mahjong with friends and while she was healthy, she swam daily with her beloved dog, Carmichael, and the North Shore sea turtles. She was a gracious hostess whose doors were always open to family, friends, and civic, church and fraternal organizations. Joan was widely known and appreciated through her many social activities on the North Shore, and at one time was referred to in the North Shore News as "the ever-smiling Mrs. Peck." She was most dedicated to the Olive United Methodist Church in Wahiawa, where she served as the Sunday School Superintendent for over 20 years. She also served as a volunteer poll worker on elections in Haleiwa for decades, and on occasion was a tutor and substitute teacher at Haleiwa and Waialua Schools. The North Shore Republican Party met on her lanai at her lovely home for many years, but this dyed-in-the-wool lifelong Republican voted for Hawai'i's Favorite Son in her last vote cast. Joan took pride in her work with The Freedom Foundation, interviewing youth from across the State of Hawai'i and chaperoning them on annual trips to Washington, D.C. and the Liberty Bell. Joan also served in several offices of the North Shore Outdoor Circle, and took particular pride in the organization's role in removing obstructions to the view of the ocean along Kamehameha Highway. She was a lioness in the Waialua Lions Club. She was a founding member and actively served in several offices in the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of Hawai'i, and, earlier this year, she was awarded the title of "Honorary State President for Life" of the Colonial Dames XVII Century in recognition for valuable service since 1966. She was a member of the DAR, Chi Omega Alumni Association, Friends of Waialua Library, Waialua Hospital Auxiliary and the Waialua Community Center. Joan was preceded in death by her parents Clark C. and Ethel M. Boardman, husband Col. Fred R. Peck in 1999 and brother Grant C. (Buddy) Boardman (Fort Worth, Texas) in 2010. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Peck Ray and son-in-law Scoll Ray, both of Haleiwa and New Orleans, sister-in-law Maxine Boardman (Fort Worth), niece Barbara Boardman (Salt Lake City) and her brothers Cal (Salt Lake City) and Clint (Fort Worth) and their spouses and children, and Cousins Anne Wilbur (Alaska) and Paul and Lorie La Page (Honolulu). She is survived by sister-in-law Jane Peck, niece Christie and her brothers Kevin, Aldrich, and David and their spouses and children (California) and nieces Susan Crenshaw and Leslie Farrington and their children (Florida). Services will be held on Saturday, October 27, at the Olive United Methodist Church at 108 California Street in Wahiawa with greetings beginning at 9:30 before the service at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, send donations to the church.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
