FONG, CAPTAIN CHONG SUM, USN RET. “CLINT”, “CHONGIE”
FONG, CAPTAIN CHONG SUM, USN RET. CLINT, CHONGIE Of Milwaukee, WI , formerly of Honolulu, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home Feb. 16, 2013. Loving husband of Dr. Mary Quinn, Clint was the proud father of their children, Patrick and Stephen. Predeceased by brothers Ah Ping, Jack and Franklin; and sisters Mary Wong, Annie Young and Betty Keoneula, he is dearly remembered by his sister, Violet Ching (Dr. Donald) of Honolulu. Clint was "Uncle Sum" to many loving nephews and nieces and "adopted" uncle to numerous Navy families. Chong Sum held advanced degrees in math, physics and nuclear engineering from Cal Poly and Naval Postgraduate School. "Chongie" was always proud of his humble beginnings at Central Intermediate and Mc Kinley High School. Captain Fong served 28 years in the US Navy with distinction; decorated twice with both the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service medal and once with the Navy Commendation Medal. He was Commanding Officer of NAVSEEACTPAC, Pearl Harbor and Officer in Charge at NAVSEEACT, Japan, and proudly served as Engineering officer on the USS Walker and USS Cavalier. Interment with full military honors March 8 at Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, WI. A celebration of Clint's life will take place on Sunday, March 17th Milwaukee.
