Francis Emory “Buddy” Oliveira
FRANCIS EMORY "BUDDY" OLIVEIRA Passed away on May 5, 2013 at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Leilani W. and was extremely proud of his three children Brigadier Gen. Bruce Emory (Jeanne) Hon., Kay Haunani Lipps (Dan) Hon., and Brian Francis (Celeste) of LA. He adored his eight grandchildren Natasha Martens (Carey) WA, Brittany Nikolic (David) WI, Bronson Oliveira LA, Trixee Tsuji TX, 2nd Lt. Cean Oliveira GA, Keliko Oliveira UNLV, C'era Oliveira USD, and Taylor Tsuji UO and his three greatgrandchildren Shaelyn and Aurelia Martens and George Nikolic. Also surviving him is his sister, Jean O. Bowen (J. Adrian) CA. Buddy participated in track and football while in high school and college and was on the US Army track team, coached the Fort Shafter Commandoes Football Team and served as assistant track coach at Waipahu HS, Kailua HS, and University HS. As a member of the US Army, he served from 1945-46, 1947-51 UH ROTC, and 1951-61 US Army Reserves, 442 Inf. Regt. A graduate of the Univ. of Hawaii, he earned a B.A in Business and Master's in Elem. Educ. and Administration. Professionally, Buddy was a teacher then principal at Nimitz Elem., Halawa Kai Elem., Barber's Point Elem., Waipahu High, Lana'i Elem. and High, Aliamanu Elem., Aiea Inter., Kalani High, Roosevelt High, Jefferson Elem. and Orthopedic Unit, Booth Memorial for Young Mothers and Shriners Hospital. He retired from the DOE in 1980 then joined the State House of Representatives Sgt. Of Arms staff. His final retirement came in 1987 as Lecturer in the UH College of Education. Never lacking for something to do, Buddy had been active with the Lana'i City Lions, the East Hon. Rotary Club, the Honolulu Elks, Central YMCA Board of Managers,Waikiki Comm. Center, was a charter member of the Moanalua Lions and most recently active with the American Cancer Society. An avid golfer, Buddy was a charter member of Moanalua Golf Club. Following retirement, he and his wife moved to Volcano, Hi where he enjoyed playing at the Volcano Golf Club, gardening and receiving visits by friends and family for 20 years. Health needs brought him back to Honolulu where he could enjoy his family even more. Nothing was closer to his heart than his family. We'll miss his pleasant disposition, ready smile, intelligence, humor, generosity and unconditional love of life and family.
