MELVYN Y. C. CHOW 76, died suddenly while paddling in Kailua Bay. Born in Honolulu, he was a graduate of St. Louis and Chaminade University. After retiring from Hawaiian Tel after 40 years, Mel continued to work at Aloha Airlines for another 15, and substitute teaching for the DOE after that. Mel was a lifelong athlete, having participated in several Honolulu Marathons, Half-Marathons, Windward Triathalons, Century Bike Rides, and Hash Harrier Runs. It was only in his later life that Mel became an avid paddler, competing with Windward teams in statewide competitions. A former U.S. Marine Corps Reservist, he volunteered for 15years as a tour guide at MCBH, introducing the Island to newly arrived military servicemen and their families. Mel loved singing with Kaneohe Seniors, as well as volunteering at the Pacific Aviation Museum. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Beverly Chow, his children, Ronald and Cynthia, and daughter-in-law Maria. A Memorial Service will be held at the Kalama Beach Club onThursday, Oct. 29th.
