BARBARA BURKE TILLEY
BARBARA BURKE TILLEY Barbara Burke Tilley died on December 10 at the age of 98. A native of New York City, she was educated at the Cours F�nelon in Paris, Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT and Katharine Gibbs Business School in Manhattan. Barbara (Bobbie) enlisted in the Women's Army Corps just two months after the Edith Nourse Rogers-sponsored bill allowing women to serve in the military was passed in May 1942. She served 3 1/2 years, retiring as a Captain. She was married to US Air Force Fighter Ace Col. Reade Tilley and together they spent 5 1/2 years in US-occupied Wiesbaden, 9 years in Omaha with Strategic Air Command, 3 years in Washington, DC with the Pentagon and 3 years at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii as part of the Pacific Air Forces. Oahu was Barbara's home for the last 43 years and since 1979, she was deeply involved with the Hawaiian Humane Society, the work of which is so vital to our community and its animals. She was also a talented painter and intrepid traveler who loved to swim, snorkel and bodysurf, remaining active throughout her life. In 2014 and 2015, she was the oldest person to complete the 2-mile Silver Streaks Sunrise Walk as part of the Great Aloha Run. Barbara leaves daughter-in-law Maureen Myers of Honolulu and grandchildren Brynn Myers of Vancouver, BC; Edward Myers (wife Cecile) of Silver Spring, MD; Reade Tilley (wife Meghan) of Malibu, CA and David Taylor Reynaud (wife Jennifer) of Baltimore, MD; also nieces Barbara Valk (husband Lance) of Wilton, CT and Casey Romero (husband Howard) of Johnson, VT; and nephew Robert Burke of San Diego, CA. A memorial service for Barbara will be private. Donations in her honor may be made to the Hawaiian Humane Society, 2700 Waialae Ave., Honolulu, HI 96826; or to a charity of your choice.
