SOYA MIYAGI Soya Miyagi, age 5, passed away on Sept. 24, 2016. Soya was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer, just before his third birthday. The Miyagi family left many dear friends in Hilo, especially members of Hui Okinawa, when they relocated to Oahu for cancer treatment at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. Members of the Hawaii United Okinawa Association assisted in the Miyagi family's transition to life in Honolulu. While undergoing treatment, Soya fell in love with Okinawan Eisa drumming. The finale at the 4th Eisa Drum Festival at Kapiolani Community College was dedicated to Soya and gave him encouragement in his fight against cancer. With his cancer in remission, Soya joined Chinagu Eisa Hawaii and became its youngest performing member. His spirit and enthusiasm inspired children and adult taiko drummers alike, and Chinagu became his extended family. In early 2016, Soya's cancer returned. Soya bravely fought the cancer and was supported by the love and encouragement of family and friends. Soya will be remembered for his spirit and courage. Soya is survived by his parents, Kohei and Miyuki Miyagi, younger brother Hiroto, and grandparents and relatives in Okinawa. A Celebration of Life service for Soya Miyagi will be held on Tuesday, October 4, at the Hawaii Okinawa Center. Visitation at 5:30 pm; Service at 6:30 pm. Casual attire. No flowers.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
