Walter Itsuki Heirakuji
WALTER ITSUKI HEIRAKUJI Walter Itsuki Heirakuji, 92, passed away on September 16, 2016. Walter was born January 4, 1924 in Hawi, Kohala, Hawaii to Jack and Shizuko Heirakuji. He was the eldest of 6 siblings. Walter volunteered to fight in World War II and served at the rank of Corporal as a member of the 442nd RCT, K-Company. He was injured while in combat in Italy and spent 2 1/2 years in hospitals in Italy, California and Texas due to his wounds. Walter was a 100% disabled Veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, and the Congressional Gold Medal. However, he was proudest of his 442nd Go For Broke patch. After returning from the War, Walter worked as an insurance and liquor salesman in Honolulu for many years. He and his wife, Sally, traveled all over the U.S. and the world in their later years. Walter was very active in many 442nd and K-Company events, reunions and meetings. Walter is predeceased by his wife Sally Hisami (Kawamura) Heirakuji. He is survived by daughters Lei (George) Fukuhara, Lynn Heirakuji, sisters Florence (Masami) Nagakawa, Ruth (Shinko) Kise, Eva (Roy) Goto and predeceased by brother Earl Heirakuji and sister Delna (Hide) Yoza. Also survived by a step grand-daughter and 2 step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Private services held.
