DR. TOM WARD LELAND Dr. Tom Ward Leland, 87, retired community psychiatrist and compassionate champion of the seriously mentally ill, passed away on September 23, 2016 at the Queen's Medical Center. Dr. Leland was born in Miami, FL October 7, 1929 to Mary and Eugene Leland. He graduated from Emory Medical School (1953) and spent his early career in Atlanta, GA. In 1976, he and his wife Jean moved to Honolulu where they both served the mental health community for 37 years. Dr. Leland was a psychiatrist at Kalihi Palama Mental Health Center, Community Care Services, and later at OCCC, as well as being a supervisor and teacher at the John A. Burns School of Medicine before retiring in 2013. Dr. Leland is survived by his wife Jean Adair-Leland, son Glenn (Daria) of Knoxville, TN, son Jonathan of Honolulu, four grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren and his beloved dog Maka. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 10, 2016 at 5pm at Church of the Crossroads with visitation at 4pm and reception to follow. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Mental Health America-Hawaii, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and the Hawaiian Humane Society.
