SATORU “JOE” AMAKI
SATORU JOE AMAKI 89, passed peacefully at Pearl City Nursing Home Sept. 29, 2016. Satoru was born Dec. 6, 1926, in Honolulu and grew up in Kapahulu. The 5th of 7 siblings, he graduated from St. Louis High School then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945, serving in Europe and the Pacific. He was assigned to the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) which was closely associated with Nisei combat units, 442nd Combat Regiment and the 100th Infantry Battalion. Returning to Hawai'i, Satoru earned his civil engineer degree from the University of Hawai'i, where he met his future wife Jane and played varsity basketball. He continued in the Army and was assigned to Korea, Schofield Barracks, France, California, Nevada, Viet Nam, Johnston Island, Japan and Fort Shafter, before retiring with distinction from the Army. He then worked as a licensed engineer for the state of Hawai'i Department of Transportation before retiring. Satoru volunteered as a tour escort for Worldwide Tours and at the USO. Surviving are his beloved wife of 63 years, Jane (Sanae Fujimoto) Amaki, Aiea; 3 daughters, Susan Powell (Baron) Olympia, WA, Leslie Swannack (David) Lamont, WA, and Donna Amaki-Hull (Kirk) Kansas City, MO; 4 grandchildren; and surviving sisters, Jane Nakagawa and Florence Seto.
