Joan Stebbins
JOAN STEBBINS 80, passed away the week of October 10, 2016, at her home in Pacific Palisades, of cancer, surrounded by family. She was feisty to the end. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, the youngest daughter of prominent physician Dr. John Shumate and his wife Ruby. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Psychology, from the University of Wisconsin. She is survived by her husband of 61 years Ron, whom she met in the first grade; her sister Nancy Flitz; daughter Terri and her husband Hans; her son John and his wife Kristine and granddaughter Julia; her son Ron "Skeeter" and his wife Wendy; and numerous nieces and nephews. Although Joan began her professional career as a switchboard operator at Lakeview Tuberculosis Sanitorium in Wisconsin she was more known for her work here in Hawaii as a legislative aide, her "View Point" radio editorials, and as a freelance writer. She was active. Her volunteer highlights included, the American Red Cross, a "Gray Lady"; work in a well baby and pediatric clinic; running a book mobile; teaching Sunday school; singing in a choir; Mediator at the Neighborhood Justice Center; and Co-Chairing the Volunteer Refugee Assistance Committee (East West Center). She was on the Board of IHS (Institute of Humans Services) and a former president of the Honolulu chapter of AAUW. Joan was compassionate, opinionated and a devoted mother. She will be remembered for her wit, intelligence and dry sense of humor. She was deeply loved by her family. Her celebration of life will be on October 28, 2016 at 2:00pm at the Waikiki Yacht Club, 1599 Ala Moana Blvd, Honolulu, HI. In lieu of flowers, please give donations to the Institute of Human Services and the Hawaiian Humane Society.
