Raymond Wai Lum Chung
90, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2017, in Portland, Oregon, with his daughter and son-in-law by his side. Raised in Kalihi, Ray was the son of Kim Wo and Julia Ake Chung, and a brother to 11 other Chung siblings: sisters Maria (Joseph Lin), Momi (Milton Soo), Elsie (Robert "Kimo" Punohu), Julia (Henry Kim), Lena (Lloyd Wong), Violet (Herbert Lau/Al Kulani), and brothers James (aka Boy), Thomas (Jane), Alvin (Arlene), and "Jimmy Boy". He survived all of them until his passing and was "Uncle Ray" to 14 nephews, 11 nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, May Lee Yook Chung, and survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy & Doug Cooke, and their sons, Noah & William, of Portland, OR, and by his son and daughter-in-law, Raymond Kalikiano Chung & Kate Baldridge, and their children, Glynis & Declan, of Santa Fe, NM. Ray attended St. Louis High School from K-12, and graduated in 1944. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army as a captain, with stints in Germany as an artillery specialist. After his service, he graduated from the University of Hawaii where he was a football and track athlete, and went on to teach math at Kawananakoa and McKinley High Schools, until retiring in 1987. He was a long-time member of Central Union Church (CUC), and active with the Prince Kuhio Civic Club & Choral Group. A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at 1:30pm at the CUC Atherton Chapel courtyard, followed by a 3:00pm committal ceremony at Punchbowl Cemetery with military honors. No flowers.
