Alma Mae Bourke
Age 94, of Kailua, died at home on August 8, 2017, surrounded by her children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Edward Luke Bourke, Sr. Alma Mae was born in Paia, Maui on May 26, 1923, to Alma A. and John M. Johnson. Alma Mae was a third-generation descendent of Norwegian contract laborers who arrived on Maui on the bark Beta after the long voyage from Norway around Cape Horn in 1881. Her father, John Johnson, was the mill superintendent at Wailuku Sugar Company. Alma Mae grew up in Wailuku, Maui, graduated from Maui High School in 1941, and attended the Queen's School of Nursing in Honolulu before getting married and moving to Kailua in 1948. She was a smart woman who devoted her life to her family, who loved Hawaii, sports and gardening. She is survived by sons Edward L. Bourke, Jr., M.D. (Tia), and Brian M. Bourke (Kalei); and daughters Sharon H. Albrecht, and Maureen P. Lichter (Randy); eight grand- children and four great-grand- children. Private services will be held.
