FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Bernadette Kikue Nakahata
Bernadette Kikue Nakahata93, of Honolulu, passed away on July 16, 2018. She was born in Papaaloa, Hawaii on October 6, 1924 to Koichi and Yoshino (Matsumoto) Yoshina. She graduated from Laupahoehoe High School in 1942 and St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Honolulu in 1945. She completed post-graduate work at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and the Chicago Lying-In Hospital, returning to St. Francis Hospital in 1947 as head nurse for the new Premature Birth Unit created to combat Hawaii's high infant mortality rate. She married Yutaka Nakahata in 1951 and started a family while pursuing her career at St. Francis, eventually leaving to join her Uncle Teruo Yoshina's pediatric practice. Following her uncle's retirement, she worked for Drs. Mitsuo and Hiroaki Tottori, and Dr. Jiro Saegusa, until her retirement. Bernadette was a long-time parishioner at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Yutaka Nakahata; sisters Hatsumi Kubota, Michiko Hamamoto, and Otoe Ebisu and brothers Howard, William, and James Yoshina. Bernadette is survived by her children: Elise (Stanley) Ching, Gayle Nakahata, Duane (Cheryl) Nakahata, Kelvin Nakahata, and Melvin (Lorinne) Nakahata; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express our deepest gratitute to the nurses and staff at Hale Ola Kino skilled nursing facility at One Kalakaua for their dedicated care of our Mom during the last years of her life. Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 am Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 800 Kaheka Street, followed by reception and lunch at Pagoda Floating Restaurant, 1525 Rycroft Street. Inurnment at 3 pm at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl). Aloha attire.
