89, succumbed to organ failure on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Pali Momi Hospital. He is predeceased by his wife Margarita P. Garcia who passed in June of 2004.
Leon was born in Basco, Batanes, Philippines on September 15, 1930. The oldest of three children, he aspired to go to college but, took it upon himself to take care of his siblings when their parents passed while he was still a teenager. At age 20 he held the distinction of being the youngest member of the 59-nation radio staff of the United Nations. He worked other odd jobs before enlisting in the US Navy at Sangley Point, Cavite Philippines in September of 1953.
On July 7, 1955 he married Margarita Remedios Baltao Palacio in Gapan Nueva Ecija, Philippines. The military presented opportunities, like moving to the United States and becoming a US citizen. He took advantage of his good fortune and ventured into real estate in California and Hawaii. Leon was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was awarded numerous medals and ribbons for his service. On October 31, 1983 he retired with 30 years of meritorious service. He later returned to work as an Administrative Officer for the Civil Service and also worked for the Postal Service.
In retirement Leon did alot of traveling. Mr. and Mrs. Garcia visited Asia, Europe, Middle East, and South America. Leon had several hobbies. He was the ultimate gardner. Born with a green thumb, he could grow nearly anything. Everywhere we lived he planted a garden. His rationale was, "if times are hard, at least we could eat vegetables." He was passionate about reading and writing. A skilled photographer, he took pictures and videos of his many trips. He later turned the pictures into a slide show. He also recorded old records on reel to reel tape. One of his favorite pastimes was playing the harmonica. He played american and filipino tunes, and had the ability to play by ear. Another of his simple pleasures was going to Anna Miller for French Toast, or McDonald's for a cup of coffee. This always brought a smile to his face. He was also a superb cook. We will miss all our Filipino favorites.
Mr. Garcia was inurned with his wife in a private ceremony on Friday, October 2nd, 2020 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. He is survived by his children: Leon P. Garcia III, Edgar D. Garcia, Lori Garcia Moltmann, and Diana P. Garcia. Spouses, Beth Morales Garcia, and Richard Moltmann; Grandchild Jarek T. Garcia; sister Mrs. Flordeliza Madarang, and brother Virgilio T. Garcia; grand niece Nicole Garcia (daughter of Virgilio), Joselito and Josephine Madarang, children or Mrs. Flordeliza Madarang.
