Richard Masao Watanabe
82, passed away on August 22, 2020 in Honolulu. He was born and raised in Lihue, Hawaii and graduated from Kauai High School in 1956. Richard then joined the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged after 4 years. In 1962, he started working for the U.S. Postal Service where he remained for 30 years before retiring in 1992. In his high school years, Richard was a star athlete and his love of sports was evident throughout his life. He enjoyed attending UH football, volleyball and basketball games through the years. And as everyone knows, he was and forever will be, a faithful San Francisco 49er fan. Richard also loved traveling to Las Vegas, hoping to hit the "Big One". Many long-lasting, lifelong relationships were formed with his Kauai classmates, co-workers, and many that he met along the way. He will be missed dearly by both family and friends. Richard is preceded in death by parents, George Teru and Mildred Chiyono Watanabe and sister, Janet Watanabe. First wife Joyce (Ahana) passed away in 1989. He is survived by wife and caregiver, Marie; sons, Leighton (Valerie) Yin, Kevin and Ross Watanabe; daughters, Wanda (Wesley) Toyama and Lianne Watanabe; seven grandchildren; five great- grandchildren, and brother, Wesley Watanabe of Lihue.
Due to current restrictions of social gatherings, a celebration of life for Richard will be held next year.
