From a young age, he worked in the parking, airlines and hospitality industry. After years of competitive surfing, he traded-up for "soul surfing" and started his family. Matt enjoyed coaching various youth sports and was the PAL Director for the McCully-Moiliili District. Together, he and his wife founded a non-profit organization SCAA - Support Children's Athletic Abilities providing various after school activities for Nuuanu, Kuhio, Ala Wai and Lunalilo Elementary. Eventually, he slowed his life down as a transportation service operator to spend more time with his family.
"Matt" or "Makaio," is survived by his wife, Katherine "LeiAloha" Johnson Wong, and his three children, Taj'a, Mika, and Tiana Wong.
It has been a year since you left my loving arms to our heavenly father's embrace. Fortunate lovers, we created sweet memories and spent a lifetime together, rich in love. Our love story continues unconditionally and eternally. Though we communicate differently now, as you've always said, we live on through our children -- they are our legacy. You remain forever and always, my endless love. - LeiAloha.
A small private service was held on May 1, 2020, (due to COVID-19 restrictions). Paddle-out and scattering of his ashes will be held in the distant future. Inquiries and questions can be directed via email to makaiowong@hawaii.rr.com.
