Janet Marie Hannemann, who met the love of her life, Albert Miller Hannemann, in Hawaii while both were employed in the airline industry, passed away on October 14, 2021, in California at the age of 80. Her beloved husband and constant companion Miller was at her bedside when she finally succumbed to cancer, ending her courageous, three-year battle.
Miller, a '57 graduate of Farrington High School, has a deep attachment to Hawaii. Although he and Jan were married on November 25, 1961, in
Torrance, California, and resided in the Golden State for the past six decades, they were frequent visitors to the islands throughout the years. Miller's local family roots include parents, the late Gustav and Faiaso Soliai Hannemann, siblings Mufi, Va (Maughan), Nua (Memea) , and the late Gus, Nephi, and Titi Hannemann.
Born in Canton, Illinois, to Albena and Joseph Bouc on June 7, 1941, Jan, of Yugoslavian Croatian heritage, brought joy to every room she entered because of her beautiful smile and upbeat spirit that were always part of her charm and persona. She was educated in Longview, Washington, where she attended R.A. Long High School, junior college, and beauty school.
What followed was a successful career as a lifelong airline professional for PSA, Pan American, Reno Air, and American Airlines. She enjoyed interacting with the public and one of her favorite experiences was working in the Pan Am lounge, rubbing elbows with celebrities and VIPs during the glamour era of flying.
In addition to raising their five children in Torrance before moving to Awahnee in Northern California in 2004, Jan and Miller explored every corner of the globe. "Places to go, people to meet, the world to greet, but not necessarily in that order," was her favorite saying and she embraced and lived it.
Jan and Miller had three sons who played professional beach volleyball, both domestically including at the University of Hawaii, and around the world. She enjoyed traveling to tournaments with Miller to cheer and watch them play and she was very much loved in the player community. She also loved to shop and couldn't pass up a bargain. Besides her grandchildren, Jan was mom to many animals and loved them all, especially her favorite dog Bo.
Besides Miller, Jan leaves behind daughters Tammy (Santarsiero) and Natalie and sons Chris, Albert, and Nicholas, 13 grandchildren, and brother Dan Bouc.
Jan's Celebration of Life will be held on November 13 at the Redondo Beach Hotel, 400 N. Harbor Dr., Redondo Beach, California, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Lunch will be served at 2:00, followed by the eulogy at 3:00. In deference to her love for Hawaii, guests are encouraged to wear aloha shirts or blouses and Hawaiian print dresses.
