James Alawa Smith, IV, 40 of Mechanicsburg, PA, a son of Kanekoa and Kaiwi passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2021, at home. He was born on January 30, 1981, in Concord, Mass.James received his GED from Cedar Cliff High School, a Bachelors' Degree from Thompson Institute and his Masters' Degree in Computer Science from Penn State University (Middletown). He was employed for the past 10 years with Penn State University (Middletown) in the Information Technology Department as a Network Security specialist. James enjoyed coaching his children's sports teams. James was a devoted husband and father
He is survived by his wife, Jessica C. (Heller) Smith, his father, CSM (Ret) James Awana Smith, III, US Army and his wife SG (Ret) Cynthia Benovitz, US Army, one son, James A. Smith V, five daughters, Alanah R. Smith, Alika K. Smith, Akala N. Smith, Alaula L. Smith and Kayla R. Herrera and his father-in-law and mother-in-law Leslie M. and Catherine Heller. James was the paternal great grandson of Cecilia Kanekoa and Ioani Kaiwi of Hana, Maui; great-grandson of Cecilia Dawson of Eagle Lake, Texas and James Smith of Texas. His maternal great grandparents were Anna M. Clark and Pedro Vitruls of Mann, West Virginia. His maternal grandparents were Helen Vitruls of Mann, West Virginia and William C. Dials of Accoville, West Virginia. His paternal grandparents were Mary Kaiwi of Hana, Maui and James Smith Jr. of Eagle Lake, Texas. James was preceded in death by his mother Sandra Katherine (Dials) Smith.
A viewing will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2021, followed by funeral services at 3:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover Street, Carlisle with Pastor Zachary Salazar officiating. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ASPCA.
