FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Patricia Sumiye Kaizawa-Miyata
Pat passed away from cancer on May 15, 2021, at the age of 76. She is survived by her son Gavan and grandson, her daughter Mara Kaizawa Hiramoto and grand- daughter, and sisters Geraldine Cheng and Christine Kaizawa.

Pat grew up in Kaimuki, graduating from Kaimuki High School. She went on to graduate from the University of Denver, and then earned her M.Ed. from Columbia University. She taught art at Livermore High School in California for over a decade before moving back to Oahu to raise her children. She and her then-husband created original ceramic pieces that were shown at arts events and sold at craft fairs. She restarted her teaching career at Kapalama Elementary as an elementary teacher until retiring.

Pat was a loving mother and grandmother, caring auntie, and a devoted friend. She delighted in exploring creative possibilities, with a touch of wabi-sabi, through art or by simply arranging or transforming the ordinary. She stressed to her students the importance of imagination and always encouraged them to expand their horizons. Pat loved to travel, and saw many parts of the world by her twenties, often going solo--Reykjavik one year, Cusco the next. She would sometimes reflect on her travels and comment on how she had yet to experience anything quite equal to the aloha spirit of the people of Hawaii, and no other place felt more like home.

Private services to be held at Hosoi Mortuary and burial at Valley of the Temples.
