David Garcia Cadiz passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his children on December 18, 2022. Born May 9, 1936 in Glen Cove, New York, David was the son of Alvin Garcia Cadiz and Mildred Evelyn (Searing) Cadiz, and grew up in Sea Cliff, NY. David served as the 1954 class president at Sea Cliff High School. He graduated from Cornell University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree. While at Cornell, he met his wife Geraldine Ardith Hoaglin. They were married July 4, 1959. Gerri passed away February 2, 2014.David was a decorated commissioned officer in the US Marine Corps. He served ten years, and earned the rank of Captain, with overseas services in Cuba 1961 and Vietnam 1968.
David and Gerri moved to Hawaii in the mid-1960s and settled in Kailua in 1970. David had a successful business career in insurance, working for several local firms as well as managing his own company, Community Insurance Services, for 35 years.
Throughout David's life, he was a competitor in many sports. Like his father, he ran for the Cornell Track team, including a trip to Spain where he ran with the bulls in Pamplona. He continued competitive running after college and had two top-ten finishes in the Honolulu Marathon. He also was competitive in cycling, motorcycle trail riding, windsurfing, rifle marksmanship, and golf. Always a gracious athlete, he shared these passions with his kids and others, happy to share tips and encourage everyone to be their best. Whether in business, in sports, or with friends and family, David was always ready for a laugh, for a hug, and to provide support. David was a dependable, reliable, loving, and generous man.
David remarried in 2019 to Diane Hires; she resides in Westfield, NY. David is predeceased by his two sisters, Ruth and Lois, and his brother Daniel. David is survived by his daughter, Shelley Cadiz Gonnella and her husband Mark Gonnella of Cary, NC; his son, Alan David Cadiz and his wife Patricia Burton Cadiz of Maui, HI; four grandchildren, Jordan Gonnella, Taylor Gonnella, Cady Cadiz Masterman and her husband William Masterman, and Cloe Cadiz; two great-grandchildren, Avery and Brady Gonnella; and with another great-grandson Masterman on the way.
David and Gerri will be inurned together at Punchbowl Cemetery January 17, 2023 at 11:30am.
