Floria Sekiko Abe
Floria Sekiko AbeGrew up in Honolulu with her four brothers and graduated from Roosevelt High School. She received a B.A. in English from the University of Hawaii Manoa and a master's degree in English as a Second Language. Floria met her husband of 60 years, Harry, at a high school dance and, after their wedding in Honolulu, embarked on her teaching career along with his military assignments in Ohio, New Mexico, California, and Japan. Her genuine warmth and kindness, her passion for teaching and dedication to her students, and her generosity and fun-loving sprit made her a favorite among students of all ages. In Hawaii, Floria taught English at Mid Pacific Institute, Moanalua Middle School, Aiea High School, and Kansai Gaidai Hawaii College (later Transpacific Hawaii College). In addition to her teaching role at Moanalua Middle School, she spearheaded an annual multicultural festival to showcase the talents of students from around the world. She was active in Delta Kappa Gamma and Pi Lamba Theta, educational honorary organizations. Floria was also a person of incredible faith and a devoted member of Kalihi Union Church and dedicated countless hours to working with seniors in the Joy Fellowship Program. Floria loved to serve others. She had the gift of hospitality and welcomed many into her home with a warm aloha. Floria passed away peacefully on November 27, 2022 at Hale Ku'ike Nuuanu. She was preceded in death by her daughter Lisa. Floria is survived by husband Harry, daughter Lora (Kevin), granddaughter Amanda, and brothers Dennis (Toshiko) and Robert (Marion); and sisters-in-law Marian and Susan. A celebration of Floria's life is planned for January 16, 2023 at Kalihi Union Church at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to Kalihi Union Church. Aloha attire.
