Passed on October 20, 2022. She was born in Columbia, Tenn. on Aug. 21, 1943, to Callist and Mary Schirmer. After her father's death, Carole and her mother moved to Kansas City. While in school she excelled in literature courses and became a dedicated equestrian. Carole attended Smith College for 2 years before transferring to UC Berkeley and then to San Jose State for their richer arts curriculum. While earning a BFA, she took a wide variety of courses and found her true love to be in the making of jewelry. In 1979 she received an MFA in metalsmithing from the University of Kansas.Carole's jewelry was featured at galleries and numerous juried exhibits in Hawaii and on the mainland. Her work was frequently selected for the annual Hawaii Craftsmen shows from the 1970's to the early 2000's, and five times for Artists of Hawaii. In 1984 she was one of 122 metalsmiths whose work was chosen for display in "Jewelry USA" at the American Craft Museum in New York City, illustrating the state of American jewelry in the mid 1980's. 57 of those artists, including Carole, were then chosen for the show "American Jewelry Now". Both shows then traveled to museums throughout the US.
Carole's long struggle with severe arthritis did not prevent her from enjoying life with her family and friends. She recently celebrated 58 years of marriage to Art Bowen, and is also survived by her daughter Amy (Jamie) Goldstein and grandson Bo. Generations of cats also remember her as their godmother.
