Born August 20, 1926, our beloved Tutu passed peacefully at her home at the age of 96. We will miss her sweet temperament, her talent for cooking delicious meals, her sharp dress sense, and her even sharper sense of humor. A Tokyo native, Fukie grew up working at her family's businesses until war forced her to leave school and evacuate the city. She later returned to Tokyo after securing a job at the fabric counter on an American military base. There, she met one particularly eager customer: her future husband, George. Coworkers became suspicious that the young American serviceman was interested in more than fabric when he began buying cloth multiple times a week. After a brief courtship, the two married and fell more deeply in love as years passed. Fukie then became a cherished wife and mother, raising her family first in Japan and then in Hawaii after moving in 1973 to her Honolulu home– where she lived for 50 years.
While no stranger to tragedy, Fukie never let life's trials poison her good nature. Her quiet strength and unfailing kindness taught her family that it's important to not only make the best of what you have, but to show gratitude and appreciation for it. We are truly thankful to have had her in our lives for so long: to learn from her, to share jokes and hold hands, and to watch Japanese dramas together. We will miss her dearly.
