FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Gayne Chun, M.D.
Gayne Chun, 95, of Honolulu, Hawai'i, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2022. He is survived by wife, Joanne Fish Chun, daughter, Gina Chun, son Dr. Deane (Kristen) Chun, and grandchildren Madeline and Dayne Chun.

He was born in Honolulu on February 16, 1927, to Won Sik Whang and Ung Yong Chun Whang.

Gayne graduated from Roosevelt High School, at the time the only public, English standard secondary school in the Territory of Hawai'i. He left the islands for extended education and training. His first stop was to Boston University for undergraduate study and then on to the University of Wisconsin for a Master of Science Degree. He subsequently graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and served in the U.S. Air Force as a medical officer at Hickam Air Force Base. He completed his otorhinolaryngology training at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester, NY.

While on the East Coast, he married and then returned to Honolulu, Hawai'i to raise a family. He developed a private specialty practice, during which time he was an active educator of medical students and surgical residents and served the community through the Queen Emma Clinics.

Always understated, yet never to be underestimated, he was a gifted and independent spirit. His steady, composed and solitary nature belied his principled convictions and drive.

Private services will be held for the family at O'ahu Cemetery in Nu'uanu.
