Shirley Chun Wong
Born April 23, 1935 in Honolulu, Hawai'i to Dr. Richard Ka Nui and Mrs. Ruth Chinn Chun, passed away on June 5, 2018 in Danville, California. As a trailblazing Chinese-American, female life insurance professional, Shirley was a recognized expert in health insurance for Hawai'i. A member of the Punahou School class of 1953, Shirley was the marching band drum major her sophomore through senior years -- the only female drum major in the Territory of Hawai'i. She received her B.A and M.S. degrees in microbiology in Washington, D.C. and worked at the National Institutes of Health. Since 1983, Shirley was an insurance agent with the Principal Financial Group as Brokerage Manager and Registered Representative. Recognizing her long-time political expertise in Washington D.C. and Hawai'i, the Health Insurance Association of America hired Shirley as its counsel for Hawai'i's health insurance issues. Shirley was appointed by Hawai'i's Governor to a lifetime seat on the Hawai'i Prepaid Healthcare Council. She won statewide recognition for her legislative efforts in 1999 and was named Life Insurance Professional of the Year in 1997, the highest award given in life insurance in the state. Her church activities included, Liturgy Coordinator and Secretary of the Diocesan Communications Commission. She is survived by daughters Catherine (Kin) and Mary Anne, sons Frank (Robin) and Timothy (Yolanda), granddaughters Camille, Megan and Nicole, and grandson Tyler Kawata. Visitation: July 9, 2018, 6-9 pm at Nu'uanu Memorial Park. Mass: July 10, 2018, 11 am at Sacred Heart Church (across from Punahou School). Burial: July 10, 2018, 12:30 pm at Diamond Memorial Park, Honolulu, HI. A Celebration of Life will be held July 29, 2018, 2-5 pm at Shannon Park and Community Center, Dublin, CA. Aloha attire.
