ELISA FLORENDO JOAQUIN 98, of Honolulu, a retired school teacher peacefully went to meet her Creator on March 18, 2013. She was born and raised in Bauang, La Union, Philippines by her father who was an engineer and a lay Protestant minister and her mother, a teacher & a business woman. She was one of 11 siblings. Nora Florendo Lorenzana, who lives in the Philippines, is the lone survivor. She taught English and Drama in the Philippines and Baltimore, Maryland for over 50 years before retiring to Honolulu in 1981. She graduated from the Univ. of the Philippines and earned her Master's degree in Education in the U.S. She was the Society Editor of a popular newspaper, The Evening Herald, in the Philippines. She loved to direct school plays and write poetry for which she won numerous awards. She published many poems including a book of poetry about her family, friends and her observations on life. She was an active member of the Honolulu Filipino community, including the La Union Circle of Hawaii, the Maharlika Toastmasters Club and a longtime Member of Central Union Church. She is survived by her sons Rodolfo, Donato Jr, Nicanor, Doel, daughter Elizabeth Fitz-Patrick, 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 8:30 a.m. on March 27, 2013.at Central Union Church., 1660 S. Beretania Street. Interment will follow immediately after at the Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery. Donations to Central Union Church may be made in lieu of flowers.
