Melvin Hayashi, 72, of Makawao, Maui, a retired Air Force experimental test pilot and director of the F-15 Strike Eagle System Program Office, died in Maui Memorial Medical Center. His awards include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit and Distinguished Flying Cross. He was born in Hilo. He is survived by wife Gail; sons Dean and Brad; brothers Douglas, Roger and Glenn Hayashi, and Larry P. Gladden; sister Pam Okimoto; and stepmother Lorraine.
