JAMES NELSON BEHSE
JAMES NELSON BEHSE Hawaii looses Printing Industry Pioneer. James Nelson Behse passed away on October 23, 2010 after suffering several years with Dementia- Alzheimer's. Jim was born on May 29, 1929 in Saginaw, Michigan to James Breslin Behse and Ruth C. Nelson. Jim spent most of his early years in Miami Beach, and Daytona Beach, Florida living with his beloved Grandmother Bertha King Behse. In Florida as a young adult Jim was known as "Big Jim the Printing Man" James was honorably discharged from the Army in 1953 after serving in Korea. He received the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. Jim came to the islands in 1958 after receiving his Printing Engineering Degree from California Polytechnic University at San Louis Obispo, California. After graduation Jim married Ethel Henry and they traveled with her young son Rod to live in Hawaii. Jim found employment with the Mercantile Printing Co and immediately brought new printing techniques and equipment to the Islands that saved sending complicated color printing to the mainland. Jim moved on to the Tong Publishing Co where he was the Marketing Director. Jim's photo skills allowed him produce many of the original photos for Oahu and neighboring island hotels. This allowed them to upgrade their marketing programs. For years tourists through out the Islands read menus produced by Jim Behse. Jim was well known to many of Hawaii's pioneers and could call Don the Beach Comer a true friend. Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years Ethel Henry Behse. Jim is survived by his brother Dean P. Behse and his wife Carolyn Behse; Jims Stepson Roy Rodrick Henry (Rod); Jim's granddaughters Jennifer Henry and Stefanie Henry; his great granddaughter Sophia and great grandson Kaala. Jim also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grand nephews. At the request of Jim no Memorial Services will take place. Jim requested that any donations in his name should be sent to the Alzheimer's Association in Honolulu. In stead of flowers please send donations to your favorite charity.
