 James Yoshimitsu MakioJames Yoshimitsu Makio, 85, of Kailua, Oahu, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at his residence. Born February 18, 1932, in Honolulu, Oahu, he was the son of the late Yoshinobu and Victoria Kahaloa Makio. He attended Pahoa High School, and then moved to Oahu, where he graduated from Honolulu Community College and later worked as an electrician. He married his love, Evelyn Chong, and lived together in Kailua. He had a passion for running which led him to complete the Honolulu Marathon in 1978. He was also an avid golfer and made a "hole in one" at the Ala Wai golf course. He retired after 40 years as an electrical superintendent for AA Electric Ltd in Honolulu. After he retired he was involved in the 1186 Electrical Union as president. His hobbies include golfing, traveling, growing orchid plants in his greenhouse, and landscaping his yard. He loved to work with his hands doing carpentry such as making curly koa ukuleles, and renovating and extending his existing residence. James will forever be remembered for his dependability, intelligence, humor, and for being a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was the strong foundation of our family and will be dearly missed. We will always carry his memory in our hearts. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Evelyn Makio; daughter, Kathleen (Maihi) Peterson; son, Brian (Cindy) Makio; daughter, Susan (Wally Waldroupe) Makio; son, Steven Makio; and 3 grandchildren, Kuuipo (Kirk) Shelton, Micah and Kalene Peterson. He is also survived by his brother, Roy (Bea) Makio and by his sister, Joan Soares. A celebration of Life will be held in his memory on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at St. John Vianney Parish, 920 Keolu Drive, Kailua, Oahu. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. and service at 11:00 a.m., followed by the interment at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery in Kaneohe. Arrangements Provided By: Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary

Papali'itele Tauga'ifala Clarence Elmer PAPALI'ITELE TAUGA'IFALA CLARENCE ELMER RAGS SCANLAN 76, of Kapahulu, checked out of the game peacefully to a standing ovation on Saturday, 27 January, 2018 on O'ahu. Born in Fagatogo, Tutuila, Amerika Samoa, he moved to Kapahulu, O'ahu as a child. He attended St. Patrick's and Saint Louis schools before graduating from 'Iolani in 1959. After nearly 20 years in HPD, he retired as a detective and went on to start his own investigations and security firms. For years, he coached football and basketball at 'Iolani and maintained his enduring, fervent support for young people by seeking and providing opportunities in many forms. As an enduring community advocate, he remained socially conscious and politically active, and he leaves a deep legacy of love and service. He posts a solid career stat line: 76 years, nine siblings, three children, four grandkids, thousands of lives positively impacted, countless bad jokes and a lifetime of laughs. Shunichi TakeuchiShunichi Takeuchi, 92, was born in Kihalani Camp, Papa'aloa, Hawaii, lived most of his adult life in Aliamanu, Hawaii and died in Houston, Texas on January 16, 2018. After leaving the sugar plantation on the Big Island, he worked as a U.S. Merchant Marine, a Honolulu Area Rapid Transit operator, a Ramp Supervisor at Japan Air Lines, a Wood Carver at Paul Fujimoto's, a Porter for Aloha Airlines and a Dog Sitter. He considered himself a "Judo Man" all his life and achieved a third degree black belt in October of 1963. Born to Yutaka Takeuchi and Shizu Tanaka, he had had 11 siblings: Shuntaro Takeuchi, Thomas Nobuichi Takeuchi (Shinobu), Violet Chieko Spencer (Gilbert "Shine"), Harry Takeuchi, Rose Fusako Kaku (James), George Megumi Takeuchi (Ruth), Florence Taeko Yanagida (Tatsuo), May Kimiyo Fukui (Isamu), Clyde Toshikazu Takeuchi (Carol), Mildred Mitsue Camarino and James Satoru Takeuchi. He married Rose Leialoha Whaley and together they had four children: Doreen Takeuchi, Lisa Takeuchi (Isabel), Debra Goodwin (Danny) and Patrick Takeuchi. He had one grandchild: Diandra "Didi" Goodwin. He shared his life with family and friends and we ask that they join us on March 10, 2018 at Diamond Head Mortuary.
