MODESTO LORENZO BAUTISTA
90, Modesto Lorenzo Bautista of Honolulu Hawaii passed away on May 31, 2017. He was born on May 8, 1927 in Piddig, Illocos Norte, Philippines to Lucio and Isabelle (Lorenzo) Bautista. At the age of nineteen, he journeyed to the island of Maui where he joined the many "sakadas" that worked in the sugar plantation. Soon after moving to Hawaii, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Korean War. Upon conclusion of the war, he was stationed in Austria then at Schofield Barracks. He retired from City and County of Honolulu after working for more than 30 years. After retirement, he continued working as a cook for the Ilikai and Outrigger hotels. He enjoyed traveling, tending to his gardens, watching sports on TV, especially NFL football and NBA basketball, and trying his luck in Las Vegas. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Felicidad Martin, son, William (Gladys), daughters, Estrella Bringas, Tessie Ulep (Sonny), Judy Choo (Sanford), and Carol Gruzinsky (Scott), ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and sisters Romana Apuya, Patrocinia Torres, and Lourdes Martinez. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 8th at Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church in Kalihi, visitation 9 am, service 10am. Burial 2pm at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery.
