Elfriede Eva (Kuhn) Duarte
Elfriede Duarte, of Kahala, passed away peacefully in her home on July 6, 2017. Elfriede was 87. She was born on February 7, 1930 in Seligenstadt, Germany. She had four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by sister, Inge Sahm and brother, Paul Kuhn, both of Seligenstadt, Germany; daughter Leilani (Jay) Duarte-Miyaki; grandson Micah Miyaki and many nieces and nephews in Germany and Hawaii. She was a loving mother, mother- in-law, Omi (grandmother), and dear friend to many. Elfriede met Manuel J. Duarte of 'Ele'ele, Kauai after World War II in Germany, they married in Germany and together came to Hawaii. Elfriede has been in Hawaii since 1966. Throughout the years she would travel back and forth to Germany, but called Hawaii home. Elfriede was a partner and operator of Friedel's Bakery on Kapahulu Avenue and Friedel's Delicatessen at Kahala Mall. For many years she also cooked for the priests at Star of the Sea Church. Visitation 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26 2017 at Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary, service 9 a.m., celebration 10 a.m. and burial 11:30 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl).
