Age 82, formerly from Salt Lake, Likini St., died in Jacksonville, FL on June 10, 2017, after suffering illness and cancer. Born Nov. 13, 1934 in Bernice, LA. John served as an Electrician's Mate in the US Navy 1954-1958, Pearl Harbor. In March 1956, he married the former Terry Hanako Tiara of Hilo. Married 50 years before Terry's passing in 2006. Married Ruth Bell in March 2007. John was employed as an electrician and then estimator with Jack Endo Electric in Honolulu. John led his Spearsville HS team to their first state championship in 1952. After coaching his sons, Gene and David, he then umpired Little League, HS, and at the University of Hawaii. John is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 10 years; sons, Gene Winford Smith and his wife, Beth of Lake Oswego OR, David Walter Smith and his wife, Teresa, of Arnauldville LA; brother Lyle M. Smith (wife Charlene). His brother, Carl M. Smith (wife Susan) died unexpectedly on June 25, 2017. Interment: 8:30 a.m. on Friday, July 28 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. Services: 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Honolulu Bible Church, 1844 Palolo Ave.
