, 90 Benedict Mary Twigg-Smith, age 90 of Honolulu, HI, slipped quietly into heaven in her sleep on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, following a brief illness. Our beloved Tutu was born in London, England on March 21, 1927, in a house on the River Thames to Isla and Edward Arnold Mitchell. She grew up in London until the age of 12, when the family went to Ireland for the summer and ended up staying for the duration of WW II. Upon arriving there, she realized that Ireland was home, and a life-long passion for Ireland and all things Irish began. In the winter of 1946, the family relocated to Connecticut. After studying art for a year in Hartford, Ben attended The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA and worked as an illustrator both in the U.S. and in England. In 1953, during a visit to family in Kona, HI, she met the love of her life, David. They were married in May of 1954 and embarked on 55 years of a wonderful relationship, until David's passing in 2010. The family lived in Hilo until 1976, when they moved to Honolulu. In 1988, Ben graduated from the University of Hawaii with a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts - Painting and Printmaking. Along with art, her greatest delight was playing music and encouraging all her children and grandchildren to take up musical instruments. She was an enthusiastic member of the Kaimana Ceili Band and played her tin whistle in every performance. Ben is survived by sons Christian, Desmond, Timothy and Michael; daughters Lucy Gospodnetich, Sophie Teururai, Oona Perez de Ayala and Mona Cameron (hanai); 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be observed July 28 at Kolea House on Kaluahole Beach. The service will begin at 10:00 am, with scattering of ashes to follow. Aloha attire.
