FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Francis K.Y. Mau
Francis K.Y. MauFrancis Koon You Mau passed away in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 12, 2017, at the age of 91. Francis was born on May 9, 1926 and raised in Honolulu, the 4th of 5 sons of Yin Fong Mau and Kim Len Won Mau. He attended Maryknoll School and graduated from St. Louis School in 1943. Francis attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa, graduating with a degree in Engineering in 1947. He subsequently attended The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, receiving his Masters Degree in Sanitary Engineering in 1948. After graduation, he drove across country with classmates, arriving in Los Angeles to catch the boat home to Hawaii. Francis' first professional job in Hawaii was with the Suburban Water System for the Territory of Hawaii. Soon after, he accepted a position with the United States Navy, Bureau of Yards & Docks, as a sanitary engineer, supporting the Navy's many water works programs throughout the world for the next 35+ years. He also served as a water works consultant for many projects & resorts in the State. After retiring from the Environmental Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Pearl Harbor, Francis moved on to a life that he was well-suited for, playing golf, tennis, volleyball and many other activities, including taking his daily naps. Francis met Lorraine through a mutual friend at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, in 1944, in a Tu Chiang Sheh - Te Chih Sheh social event. The fraternity-sorority events provided the dating opportunities for them. Although Lorraine had career plans as a journalist to continue her education in Minnesota, she chose LOVE, and they were married on May 24, 1949. They recently celebrated 68 years together. For Francis & Lorraine, FAMILY was the priority. They both agreed early on that they would have 4 children, but when the first 4 children were all GIRLS, they decided to keep on trying, succeeding in adding 2 sons & a daughter to the family. They also decided that they would do whatever they could do to provide for their children's education. Today, all 7 children have earned advanced degrees, and although Francis was a man of few words, his children all knew he was very proud of them. Francis was looking forward to attending his daughter's alumni recognition at Creighton University in September 2017. Francis is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine and his seven children - Geraldine Mizuko (Mark), Katherine Mau, Barbara Kashiwabara (Ross), Patricia Hanson (Barney), Wayne Mau, Marjorie Mau (Ted Mala), and Glenn Mau. Eighteen grandchildren & three great-grandchildren helped mellow Koon Koon/Tai Koon over the years, becoming a source of pride, joy & adventure for him - Lorrie Mizuko, Alan Mizuko (Zhong Han), Megan Mizuko, Elisse Takara, Karessa Kavanaugh (Dave), Kyrene Konopolsky (Adam), Christine Toguchi (Shane), Wendy Kashiwabara, Ryan Kashiwabara, Po'okela Hanson, Pomaika'i Hanson, Pono Hanson, Heather Mau, Joshua Mau, Makana Ng, Ka'ulu Ng, Ray Mau Mala, Mia Mau Mala, Chase Larson, Kaylee Kavanaugh, and Dane Toguchi.
