Dr. George E. Mattimoe94, beloved husband, loving father, and grandfather passed away in Honolulu on June 15, 2017. After graduating from Napa High School he attended Sacramento Junior College until enlisting in the U. S. Navy during WWII serving aboard the USS Bennington as an Aviation Electronics Technician. He later attended Oklahoma A&M, and earned a Master's and Doctorate degree from California Western University. He began his professional career as a draftsman at Yale and Town and later moved on to the Mantes Scale Co. where he designed sophisticated liquid measurement and packaging devices leading to several company patents. Dr. Mattimoe, who preferred to be called "Matt", relocated to Honolulu as a metrologist for the State of Hawaii to establish and administer the State's Weights and Measures program under Governor Burns. Among his many professional accomplishments: Hawaii's Weights and Measures program received national recognition as being the outstanding program in the U.S.; author of "A Brief History of Weights and Measures in Hawaii," a synopsis of the early Monarchical Hawaiian system of measurements up to present times; Chairman of the National Conference on Weights and Measures; was instrumental in the safe removal of cobalt from the Dept. of Agriculture's Irradiation facility. Recognizing the need to protect consumers in Hawaii and the US, he designed & patented a temperature correcting gasoline dispenser which he gifted to the Hawaii Automotive Gasoline Retail Dealers Assn. His research & contributions to the gasoline retail industry spurred worldwide adoption of these automatic temperature correcting devices and this technology is now standard in many countries today. Many of Matt's life passions involved teaching & mentoring others. As a certified Dale Carnegie Instructor, he coached many students, including those at San Quentin Prison; was a Freemason with the Burlingame Lodge; Pilot for Civil Air Patrol - California Wing, and later Squadron Commander for the Hawaii Kai 'Aeko Composite Squadron; he also held numerous positions with the Boy Scouts of America Aloha Council and Troop 101.
