Haruye Miyagi
Haruye Evelyn Miyagi, age 100, of Honolulu passed away at the Hale Ho Aloha Nursing Home on March 20, 2017. Haruye was born on January 26, 1917 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Tokutaro and Misaye Kawakami. She was the only girl among four brothers (Francis, Eugene, Takeo, and Morris) in the Kawakami family. She grew up in Puunui (upper Liliha) and attended Maemae Elementary School and Central Intermediate School. At Central Intermediate School, she met her future husband, Hiroo "Woody" Miyagi. As intermediate school sweethearts, they fell in love and were married in 1941. This was the beginning of a marriage that lasted nearly 70 years. They had two sons, Dale and Vern. During her life, Haruye worked very hard as a wife, mother, and homemaker. She was a licensed baby-sitter and took care of more than 15 toddlers/children during her lifetime. Many have acknowledged her care and expressed their appreciation for the love she provided them during their early development. Haruye was also an accomplished seamstress and would make most of the clothes worn by the Miyagi family. This included khaki trousers and aloha shirts for Woody and the boys, costumes for school events, and even khaki school bags. She was a super chef and prepared the best fried/roast chicken, pumpkin pies, crabmeat potato salad, spaghetti, and shrimp curry. She could also transform canned food into gourmet fare. Haruye always put her family and their welfare first. When things got difficult she would always say "GAMBATTE" - don't give up/do your best. She was always close to Woody and was very saddened by his passing nearly 7 years ago. She continued to care about the family. She would always ask, "Is everybody OK?" Before she passed away she was assured, "Everybody is OK." She will be missed. She is survived by her son, Vern (Gail); grandchildren, Lorien and Brent (Michele); and great grandchildren, Landen, Lincoln and Abigail. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD ON APRIL 14, 2017 AT NUUANU MEMORIAL PARK AND MORTUARY (2133 NUUANU AVENUE, HONOLULU, HAWAII).
