WAYNE HAROLD DELVENTHAL

Posted On August 26th, 2012 -

WAYNE HAROLD DELVENTHAL
Wayne Delventhal, age 81, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on August 13, 2012. Wayne was born on November 22, 1930, in Brighton, Colorado, to August and Frieda Delventhal on a farm homesteaded by his grandparents.
Wayne was the eldest son and brother to Keith and Glen. As a boy, Wayne worked on the family farm and was active in 4-H, achieving a National Junior Vegetable Grower award. Eager to leave farming behind, Wayne convinced his parents to send him to Seward, Nebraska, for high school and graduated in 1948. Wayne subsequently received a Lutheran teaching certificate in 1951 and Bachelors Degree in 1953 from Concordia University in Seward. Wayne received his Masters of Elementary Administration degree from Indiana University in 1962. Wayne dedicated his life to the education of children in schools of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
Wayne was assigned to begin his teaching career in Crown Point, Indiana for the fall term, 1951, where he taught grades 3, 4, and 5. On December 30, 1951, Wayne married the love of his life, Viola Elaine Heath, of Brighton, Colorado. It was in Indiana where the couple welcomed sons David Wayne (1954) and Paul Logan (1956) into their family. In 1956, the family relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Wayne had the privilege of starting an elementary school for Redeemer Lutheran Church. In Colorado Springs, Janice Elaine (1959) and Douglas Eugene (1960) were born. Sadly, Douglas passed away shortly after birth.
In 1962, Wayne accepted a position as the principal of Trinity Lutheran School in Wahiawa. He enjoyed snorkeling and playing the ukulele with family and friends around evening bon fires at the beach in Haleiwa. Wayne and Elaine welcomed son Mark William to the family in 1962. In 1984, Wayne began teaching and later became the principal for Our Savior Lutheran School in Aiea. Wayne retired from teaching in 1996.
In retirement, Wayne and Elaine were blessed to travel extensively and spend time with their family. He volunteered at Our Savior in the library and served on the School Board. He was the representative for California District Church Extension Fund for the Hawaiian Islands. Wayne was active in Friends of Waialua Library, Friends of Waialua Bandstand, and Aloha Patrol at Waimea Bay. Wayne also assisted his son, Dave, with the production of Hawaii’s Special Papaya Seed Dressing.
Wayne and Elaine celebrated 60 years of marriage on December 30, 2011. As a final act of Wayne’s dedication to education, his body was donated to the University Of Hawaii School of Medicine to mentor their medicinal community.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Elaine; three sons David (Ewa), Paul Logan (Barbara), and Mark (Erin) all of Haleiwa; daughter Janice Haptonstall (Chet) of Divide, Colorado; eight grandchildren (Kiana Delventhal; Eric and Cassandra Logan; Kai, Trent and Reid Delventhal; Elaina Delventhal and Renee Haptonstall); brother, Glen (Doris) of Brighton, Colorado; and much loved extended family.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 4:00 pm at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 98-1098 Moanalua Road, Aiea. Casual attire. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wayne’s name may be made to Our Savior Lutheran School.

JOHN KEALAIKI LEE
John Kealaiki Lee passed away August 17, 2012 at his home. He was born March 21, 1933 to Joseph and Elizabeth Noa Lee in Honolulu. He was the youngest in a family of nine children. In this large family the values of cooperation, hard work, and sharing with others were instilled in him. He was a 1951 graduate of Kamehameha Schools. John was also a long-time employee of Pan American World Airways which afforded him and his family opportunities for worldwide travel; African safaris, Hong Kong epicurean dining, cruises on the Rhine, and treks at the Great Wall. He was a member of Mamaka Ai’alo, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Hawaiian culture.
John will be remembered as thoughtful, generous, and kind, as a loving husband and father, and a true, great friend. Annual Alaskan fishing expeditions would often yield great bounties of salmon He would carefully can and share with many family members, friends, and acquaintances. At New Year’s one of his great joys was to coordinate the preparation of hundreds of laulau, also given to friends and family. He touched many lives by his positive frame of mind, outlook on life, and selfless manner. Indeed, John embodied the Hawaiian proverb, “Ha’awi, ha’awi, ha’awi pau loa”, Give, give, give till it’s all gone.
